Against the scenario of darkness that has engulfed the human horizon due to ignorance, oppression, corruption, denial of justice, inhuman treatment of women, drugs depicted by the dark background of the crest there is light that dispels the gloominess of our world and heralds’ joy and peace, it is the light of knowledge which is gained through education. The patrons of our college, honourable late Sr. Balbir Singh ji conscious of the social and moral dimensions of the fast-changing modern world, endeavored hard to herald a new era in the field of education. The College Governing Council embraces with all sincerity and loyalty the mission of enlightening the young minds by striving effortlessly to sustain a balance between goodwill and workmanship. The sapling of Lyallpur Khalsa College for Women, Jalandhar was sown as a women section of the Lyallpur Khalsa Educational Body in the year 1960. It has now bloomed into a full-fledged,independent and prestigious institution affiliated to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. We endeavor to stand for academic excellence, development of skills and especially character formation based on the love for Almighty and service of people as exemplified by our prophets. We have come a long way since 1960 and today are able to offer our students good infrastructure, experienced faculty, efficient administration and a wide repertoire of courses. We aim to train our students to become good citizens, distinguished for their sincere commitment to work, society and country at large. Let your college be widely known and appreciated for the fibre and sinew of moral and intellectual strength of the academic community, which it is privileged to house and nourish, and for its efforts to dispel darkness and brighten the lives of young learners. Location The college is situated near Sadar Police Station with G.T Road on one side and Cantt. Road on the other. The groovy, serene eucalyptus plantation lends healthy and scenic beauty to the college. Though it’s location is distanced from the maddening crowd of the city, yet it provides an easy access to the girls of Model Town, Defence Colony, Urban Estate, Ranjit Nagar, Mota Singh Nagar, Cantt. and other parts of the city. It also attracts students from Phagwara, Adampur and rural areas of Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur. Local locomotives running through Jalandhar and Nakodar stop at Lyallpur Khalsa College halt which the government has specially provided in response to the efforts made by the college to facilitate the approach of the students from villages. All buses ply on Cantt. Road or G.T Road from various parts of the city and the locomotives stop in front of the college gate during the college hours, and the main bus stand is also very close to the college. BUILDING The college is housed in a commodious building constructed on hygienic lines with its main entrance gate on the Cantt. Road side. The college has well- equipped labs, spacious and airy classrooms, and an air- conditioned auditorium. A spacious hostel caters the needs of the students coming from outside the city. The college canteen is well furnished and properly maintained. Lush green lawns overlapped with fresh flowers render not only beauty to the college building but also provides a very congenial atmosphere for the harmonious growth of the students. Vision “Empowering women to participate fully in economic life across all sectors to build stronger economies, achieve internationally agreed goals for development and sustainability, and improve the quality of life for women, men, families and communities” The College envisions to admit undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students those who have the highest potential for benefitting from the education provided by the College and the University, regardless of their financial, social, religious or ethnic background. The College provides teaching facilities, support (including pastoral care) and social, recreational and sporting facilities to enable each of its students to realise as much as possible of their academic and personal potential whilst studying here. This forms the basis for the College’s statutory purpose, the advancement of education, religion, learning and research, and the College pursues its charitable objects for the public benefit through a wide variety of activities, like providing, in conjunction with the University , offering a world class educational opportunities ; supporting students financially and rewarding excellence through the provision of bursaries, scholarships, prizes and grants, as well as assisting students in particular financial hardships. Providing pastoral care to all the students through the tutorial system and other welfare and support mechanisms; providing library, computing, cultural, sporting and social facilities to enable students to achieve their full potential both academically and otherwise. Aims and Objectives Intellectual development which includes development of divergent thinking, creativity, reasoning and the ability to make judgements and to analyse and solve problems, ability to take initiative, persistence, attentiveness and capacity for observation and imagination, the ability to memorize, understand, apply, analyse integrate and evaluate knowledge and the skills for innovation and be able to adapt to changes. Physical development that includes awakening consciousness of maintaining health and physical fitness. Moral development which includes developing the ability to face moral challenges and dilemmas in an informed, authentic manner that is in harmony with ethical values that are developed freely and voluntarily. Spiritual development that enables one to search the meaning and purpose in life. Aesthetic development which involves cultivation of children’s interest in aesthetic expression, cultivation of abilities to enjoy life and to appreciate various forms of beauty, art and culture and the ability to optimize their leisure and enrich their cultural life. Cultural development which involves inculcating cultural values in children. Social development which involves social qualities in children to make them fit for society. Harmonious development which involves developing harmoniously and simultaneously all the powers and capacities inherited by the child. Character formation of individuals to make them one with virtues and brotherly love who prize truth, justice, wisdom, benevolence and self control as the worthy acquisitions of a successful life. Education for vocation to prepare the student for some future profession or vocation or trade so that they are able to earn their livelihood. Education for citizenship that enables students to perform multifarious civic duties and responsibilities. Education for self-realization which means fulfilment of oneself of the possibilities of one’s character or personality. From the religious point of view, it refers to a profound spiritual awakening where there is an awakening from an illusory self identity image (ego), to the true, divine, perfect condition that the individual is. Religious Instructions Our College maintains services in the College Gurudwara daily promoting the activities of the religious faith and fostering the spiritual welfare of College members irrespective of denomination or faith. The college imparts religious instructions in keeping with the high ideals and great values of Sikhism. Morning prayers, celebration of Guruparvs and anniversaries of Prophets is a regular feature of the institutional tradition. The Shabad Deh Shiva Var Mohe Ihe, instils fearlessness among the students . This shabad stands for the united power of “Shakti and Bhakti”.
